Job Description

Summary This position is a Supervisory Wildland Firefighter, GW-0456-8 working in Winnemucca, Nevada for the U.S. Wildland Fire Service. Major Duties Exercise supervisory authority over firefighters within a fire module or crew. Apply an experienced understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography, weather, fuels, and training in fire management. Plan actions and direct utilization of fireline resources; direct assigned suppression operations. Procure, maintain, and inventory tools and equipment. Supervise and direct fuels management projects that include prescribed fire, mechanical, and biological treatments. Participate in fire prevention events. Education IMPORTANT – There is not an option to qualify for the 0456 series utilizing education at the GW‑08 level. Requirements Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Suitability for federal employment, as determined by background investigation. Direct deposit is required. Must submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment; subject to random drug testing thereafter. Must pass a pre‑employment medical examination and may be subject to post‑employment medical examinations to maintain fitness standards. Must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions. Must operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties. Must hold a valid state driver’s license throughout employment. May be required to operate a fire engine and various motor vehicles; a valid Commercial Driver’s License may be required. If qualifying with a driver’s license that includes a firefighter endorsement, must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days of employment. Must submit a Commercial Driver’s License and driving record. Must submit, at own expense, all certified driving records from all states that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, using a state sealed envelope or direct submission by state authorities. May be required to serve a 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and continued employment are evaluated. Individuals assigned male at birth after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for the Selective Service. Must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position. Must meet the maximum age requirement. May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. Subject to frequent extended travel up to 50% of the time, particularly during fire season. Must obtain a government charge card for travel. May be required to complete training and maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
