Job Summary

The Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department is currently searching for a postdoctoral investigator to work with a cross-disciplinary team to investigate the ecological consequences of Gulf Stream meanders and warm-core rings breaking the shelf-slope frontal transport barrier through interacting with the steep and irregular shelf edge topography and inducing submesoscale cross-shelf exchange processes.

Job Description

This postdoctoral investigator position requires strong background in data analysis. Some familiarity with ocean instrumentation and sensors is preferred. A general understanding of the interactions between physical, biogeochemical, and biological processes is desirable. Strong oral and written communication skills, preferably demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations, are also required. The initial appointment is one year. Renewal of the appointment is conditional on the postdoctoral investigator making satisfactory progress during the first year and continuation of funding. This is a full-time position with full benefits.

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Compile observational data, including historical sea surface height, temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll concentration collected by numerous satellites, high-resolution sea surface height from SWOT, plankton community products from PACE, in situ physical oceanography measurements, as well as in situ plankton observations from automated high-throughput flow cytometry and imaging.
  • Synthesize the datasets to identify key cross-shelf exchange processes and achieve a deep understanding of the underlying biophysical dynamics.
  • Take initiatives and pursue new research ideas in the analysis
  • Present the results in regular group meetings and scientific conferences.
  • Document clearly the results of the scientific analysis in progress reports and scientific journal publications.
  • Collaborate with a team of interdisciplinary experts and communicate effectively with collaborators.

Required Experience & Education

  • PhD degree in oceanography

Preferred Experience & Education

  • Prior experience in oceanographic data analysis

Additional Job Requirements

Salary Range: $68,300 - $72,000

The salary range provided for this position reflects the expected minimum and maximum base pay for new hires. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and market conditions. In addition to base salary, eligible employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package.
