Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the English Teacher develops students' skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and communication. The teacher fosters an appreciation for a variety of literary genres, encourages students to read and analyze diverse texts, and supports the development of critical-thinking and effective communication skills appropriate for students in grades 6 7.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and implements English language arts curriculum and instruction consistent with school division goals, the Virginia Standards of Learning, and students' developmental needs.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is safe, respectful, inclusive, and conducive to individual, small-group, and whole-group instruction.
  • Develops lesson plans, instructional materials, and learning activities that provide meaningful, sequential, and appropriately challenging learning experiences.
  • Provides instruction in reading comprehension, literary analysis, grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, composition, spelling, research, creative writing, and oral communication.
  • Teaches students to analyze and evaluate a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, informational materials, and digital media.
  • Encourages students to read a wide range of literature and informational texts for understanding, enjoyment, research, and critical analysis.
  • Provides opportunities for students to develop effective written and verbal communication skills through discussions, presentations, writing assignments, and collaborative activities.
  • Uses differentiated instructional strategies to meet the academic, social, and developmental needs of all students, including students with disabilities, English learners, and advanced learners.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments of student learning and progress and uses assessment results to adjust instruction and provide appropriate interventions or enrichment.
  • Prepares students for division and state assessments by aligning instruction with applicable standards and using student performance data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of student attendance, grades, assignments, assessments, and academic progress in accordance with school division procedures and applicable laws.
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with students, parents, guardians, administrators, and other staff regarding student progress, achievement, behavior, and instructional needs.
  • Encourages family involvement in students' education and provides timely information regarding classroom expectations, assignments, and student performance.
  • Establishes and maintains clear expectations for student behavior and ensures student conduct complies with school rules, division policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Collaborates with other teachers, instructional specialists, counselors, administrators, and support staff to improve student achievement and provide appropriate services for students.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, committees, parent conferences, school activities, and division wide professional development.
  • Continues to develop professional knowledge and skills by attending workshops, conferences, training sessions, and other professional learning opportunities.
  • Selects, requests, and maintains appropriate textbooks, instructional materials, technology, supplies, and classroom equipment.
  • Supports schoolwide programs, extracurricular activities, literary publications, writing contests, and other student enrichment opportunities as appropriate.
Additional Duties

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other central office administrators designated by the Superintendent.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school division buildings, professional meetings, training sessions, and other locations as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational practices, and middle school instructional strategies.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction and the developmental, academic, social, and emotional needs of students in grades 6 7.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, composition, vocabulary, spelling, literature, reading comprehension, and oral communication.
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning and applicable state and federal education requirements.
  • Knowledge of student assessment, data analysis, and the development of instructional action plans.
  • Ability to develop engaging and age-appropriate lessons and learning activities.
  • Ability to effectively manage a middle school classroom and establish a positive learning environment.
  • Ability to use computers, instructional technology, student information systems, and educational software.
  • Ability to organize work, manage time, maintain records, and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, families, staff, and members of the community.
  • Ability to evaluate professional performance and participate in ongoing professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and community members.

Physical and Mental Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a classroom and school building environment. The position requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, supervise students, use classroom technology, and perform other duties associated with classroom instruction.

Certification/Licensure

Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement appropriate for teaching English in grades 6 7.

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, English, or a related discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.

Master's degree in education, English, or a related field preferred.

Experience

Successful prior teaching experience in English language arts or at the middle school level is preferred.
